the long road to healthy

True Confessions Monday

Filed under: family, fitness, keeping it real — karena @ 3:13 pm

It’s time I finally got my act together and recommitted to this journey.  It’s a long road, but it’ll be a hell of a lot longer if I continue walking backwards.  So, in an effort to get back on track, here are my true confessions.

1. Last Monday morning, I officially started homeschooling my five year old.

2. Monday afternoon, I seriously contemplated sending him to the local schools.

3.  This week has been all about finding the balance of school and parenting.

4.  It has NOT been about exercise and portion control and healthy eating.

5.  I’ve had at least a glass of wine every evening.  Often more than one.

6.   My husband and I always swore we’d never get a Wii.

7.  We scoffed at people who raved about how great it was.

8.  Saturday we caved and bought one.

9.  I’ve had more fun in the last two days than I’d have thought possible.

10.  Things are looking up.

  2. I was one of those who swore off video games, too! When I visited my friend, who had a Wii, it completely changed the way I looked at it. We have a blast with ours, and working out on the Wii is AWESOME!!!

I admire you for homeschooling! I’d probably want to quit after the first day, too!

    • We’re loving it!! Today I did 47 minutes — my 5yo son’s favorite was when he obliterated me during the 2 person run. I couldn’t even see him anymore!

Funny, with homeschooling (which we’ve been doing for a while now, just not officially because he’s only now school-aged), it’s not the academics that’s the issue. It’s the personal dynamic.

  4. the wii is seriously good times. i too admire you for homeschooling! sometimes i just don’t think i’m smart enough to take on that task! i wish you luck, i am sure you’ll find your groove soon! ps. i wouldn’t worry too much about the wine unless there are morning glasses involved too. 🙂

    • no, no morning glasses! Not yet, anyway. I spend my mornings swilling too much coffee and trying to stay ahead of a 5 year old that already knows more about astronomy than I do!

  5. Homeschooling is both fun and challenging! The best part of homeschooling is watching your little guy really “get something”! The hardest is learning to balance mom and teacher! It’s a process, but one that is well worth it if you stick with it!

You will continue to LOVE your Wii! and if you are having a bad “school” day, incorporate your Wii into the school day for PE!! it makes everyone feel better!! Then get back to the books after a little physical exercise!

    • Ann, you are so right! We’re finding the academics easy. He’s like a sponge, and the only problem academically is me being able to answer his science questions. The balance between mom and teacher, though, ouch, that’s tough. Everyone tells me the first year is the hardest, and the first month or two of that is the worst. We’re not giving up, but the encouragement is well-received!

And we used the Wii today for PE, although Liam has never heard that term. All he knows is he got to run circles around me on the Wii Fit. And, errr, I might have knocked him out multiple times boxing on the Wii Sport. That’ll fix him to balk at phonics!!

  8. Welcome to the world of Wii- weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! I’m so glad you are joining us in the craziness. And there have been many nights that I have wanted a glass of wine (or two) but I decided that I don’t want to waste the calories. Good luck on homeschooling!

  9. I have to be honest, the combination of #1 and #2 made me laugh out loud. That’s just good comic timing. : )

And you are going to LOVE the Wii. We were reluctant, too, and it has become a constant in this house!
